چکیده

The late 19th century was a golden period of the Brain Psychiatry, with its German movement and influent members, such as Wilhelm Griesinger (1817–1868), and Theodor Hermann Meynert (1833–1892), as seen in Fig 1, who was the most arduous defender of a strong organic basis for Psychiatry1. Griesinger asserted in his 1845 “Pathologie und Therapie der psychischen Krankheiten” the primacy of brain over mind for Psychopathology2.

The effect of ibotonic acid lesion of the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) on the response of cortical neurons in the rat barrel cortex

In the present study, the effect of NBM lesion on the temporal characteristics of response integration evoked by multiple whisker stimulations in the barrel cortex of rats was studied. Nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) projects to widespread areas of the cortex and provides the major cholinergic input (80%) to the cerebral cortex. In this study we examined the effects of NBM lesion on the respon...

The nucleus basalis of Meynert in 20 definite cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

The population of neurons and the neuronal size in the nucleus basalis of Meynert (nbM) were studied in 20 patients with definite Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). When compared with a normal control group, the 20 CJD brains showed a significant loss of neurons and reduction of neuronal size, mainly in the middle level of the nbM and mostly affecting the right side. Since these findings show som...

Effects of Zizyphus jujuba Extract on Motor Coordination Impairment Induced by Bilateral Electric Lesions of the Nucleus Basalis of Meynert in Rat

Introduction: Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by memory impairment, cognitive dysfunction, behavioral disturbances, and deficits in activities of daily living. AD has been found to be associated with a cholinergic deficit in the post-mortem brain characterized by a significant decrease in acetylcholine amount and loss of cholinergic neurons of the nu...

A comparison of changes in the nucleus basalis and locus caeruleus in Alzheimer's disease.

In 22 patients with Alzheimer's disease loss of neurons from the nucleus basalis of Meynert and locus caeruleus averaged 58% and 71% respectively with nucleolar volume being reduced by 30% in both. These changes were greater in those patients under 80 years of age and in such patients damage to the locus was more severe than that to the nucleus basalis. In older patients (over 80 years) changes...
